Is a gas regulator mechanical?
1. On One Hand: Most Are Mechanical
A standard gas pressure regulator is made up of springs and rubber diaphragms, according to GlobalSpec, an engineering database. The regulator responds to pressure mechanically, by physically pressing against the springs and diaphragms, causing them to move and open or close valves. This description can also be found in the technical papers of many companies selling gas regulators.
2. On the Other: Some Are Electrical
Electrical gas regulators are also available. The library of Oklahoma State University has descriptions of gas pressure regulators that run on electrical parts, where the valve is operated by a solenoid instead of a spring.
3. Bottom Line
The vast majority of technical data sheets from gas regulator manufacturers such as Fisher Regulators describe exclusively mechanical regulators. Examples of electrical regulators are few and far between. Gas regulators are almost all mechanical.
